Impact Makers’ Michael Pirron, Rodney Willett and Eve Akers attended the recent B Corp Champions Retreat in Boulder, Colorado. The annual event, which took place September 17-19, 2013, assembled representatives from 300 B Corps.
This year’s theme was Ripples, small actions that drive a big movement. The B Corp community has grown to 850 certified B Corporations from 28 countries. Attendees traveled from as far as Brazil, Chile, Australia and Hong Kong.
The retreat included presentations by the B Corp co-founders, people spearheading international B certification efforts, and brainstorming, planning and discussion sessions. The event’s goals are to strengthen and connect the B Corp community for collective innovation and inspiring support.
The agenda was changed due to the recent massive flooding in the Colorado community. While there were leisurely activities, such as a tour of new B Corp member New Belgium Brewing, many attendees also graciously rolled up their sleeves and volunteered to help with cleanups. The volunteers helped Boulder-based B Corp Namaste Solar, whose office was flooded and worked to clear trails and debris in nearby Sunshine Canyon.
In addition to the growth and international reach of the movement, another significant milestone that was celebrated at the event included the passage of benefit corporation legislation in Delaware. Twenty states have passed the legislation, allowing companies to include the interests of stakeholders beyond shareholders, including the community and environment.
