Bart Houlahan, co-founder of B Lab, is coming to Richmond, and these organizations are working together to ensure that a group of Richmond leaders and entrepreneurs gain access to his expertise and insight during his brief visit on May 8, 2013. B Lab is the nonprofit leading the efforts to get B Corp legislation passed across the country and around the world. B Lab also quantifies organizational social impact through its certification process. Bart’s visit will mark the kickoff of a Richmond based Social Enterprise networking group for socially minded businesses, impact investors, and individuals interested in learning more about the significance of Social Enterprise in the Richmond region. The networking event will take place on May 8th from 7:00pm – 9:00pm at LaDifference at 125 S 14th St. Richmond, VA 23219
Bart Houlahan, 45, along with his partners, Jay Coen Gilbert and Andrew Kassoy, co-founded B Lab in 2006. B Lab is a nonprofit organization dedicated to using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. B Lab drives systemic change through three interrelated initiatives: 1) Certified B Corporations: a corporate certification for sustainable businesses and social enterprises that meet higher standards of social and environmental performance and legal accountability; 2) GIIRS Ratings and Analytics: a ratings platform (analogous to Morningstar and Capital IQ) that drives capital to impact investments by assessing the social and environmental performance of companies and funds; and 3) Benefit Corporations: a new, legally-recognized corporate form that changes corporate fiduciary duty, permitting companies to create shareholder value and social value.
We are so proud to be part of the growing Social Enterprise community, and part of our charge is to grow the social enterprise sector by spreading the word about what we do and why it is so important for the future of business. Over 600 leading businesses have joined the community of Certified B Corporations, wanting to influence the market beyond the scope of their individual businesses. These entrepreneurs want to be part of something bigger. We hope you will join us.
