NASCIO Recognizes Outside VDOT Project, Supported by Impact Makers

NASCIO (National Association of State Chief Information Officers) honored the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) as a Finalist in the “Improving State Operations” category for their 2014 State IT Recognition Awards. The award-winning project, OutsideVDOT, was supported by Impact Makers.

OutsideVDOT is a business partner extranet that provides collaboration team site for VDOT employees and external business partners. It leverages SharePoint 2010 technology. VDOT’s work entails significant interaction and communication with outside vendors across the state. The communication was historically done through email and FTP (file transfer protocol) servers with difficulty. Emails and files would be lost or misplaced, leading to inconsistent information sharing, security issues, and duplication of efforts. The issues would cause delays in decision making and project deadlines.  The benefits of OutsideVDOT include increased employee productivity and estimated cost savings of over $5 million in five years. The project is especially important because it is the first business partner extranet of its kind in Virginia and can lead other agencies to improved collaboration and efficiencies.

The OutsideVDOT project was also recognized at COVITS (Commonwealth of Virginia IT Symposium) as a Governors Technology Award Winner and by RichTech (Richmond Technology Council) as a Technology Award Finalist.
