Impact Makers participated in the North Carolina HIMSS Cybersecurity Forum and Winter Dinner on January 28, 2016 in Winston Salem, NC. The event addressed the many approaches to provide a secure infrastructure as providers and the healthcare industry are challenged to manage ever-growing patient information.
Cathie Brown, Impact Makers’ Principal Consultant and Governance, Risk, and Compliance Practice Lead, presented “Information Security Metrics and Frameworks in a Challenging Landscape.” Cathie shared a breakdown of data breaches by industry showing healthcare as the leading target. According to the FBI, 43% of all reported identity theft cases in the U.S. are medical identity thefts, often to obtain government benefits, healthcare or prescription drugs. The selling price for a medical record is 10-20 times higher than for a credit card number. Cathie presented ways to address this challenging landscape, discussed the Cyber Security Act of 2015, information security frameworks and measuring performance and metrics.
There was an interactive workshop with industry experts discussing elements of Information Privacy and Security thought leadership. The panelists included Cathie Brown, Joe Nartowicz, Vice President/Chief Information Security Officer at Bon Secours Health System, Inc. and Jim Kelly, ISO at Mission Health.
